Meet the SeniorNavigator Staff

Adrienne Johnson, Executive Director             

Adrienne

A leader in Virginia’s aging network, Adrienne joined the SeniorNavigator team in 2004 and has held various aging related positions in her career.  As Executive Director, she works in partnership with the public, non-profit, and private sectors and is responsible for the development, marketing, board oversight and operational management of SeniorNavigator.  Prior to becoming Executive Director, Adrienne served as a member of SeniorNavigator’s Leadership Team while performing her duties as Director of Website Operations.  As Director of Website Operations, she was responsible for the oversight of the SeniorNavigator, VirginiaNavigator and disAbilityNavigator websites and management of website content and data based on consumer needs and current issues in aging.  Additionally, she has served as project and grant manager for several of SeniorNavigator’s major initiatives.  

Adrienne earned her Master’s degree in Gerontology with a concentration in Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Connecticut.  She serves on the board of the Virginia Quality Healthcare Network (VQHN); as Secretary of the Virginia Elder Rights Coalition (VERC); as an active member of the Health Promotion for People with Disabilities (HPPD) Taskforce; as stakeholder representative for Virginia’s Project 2025; as well as a host of other coalitions and committees serving the aging and disability communities throughout Virginia.   

Katie Benghauser, Director of Operations, Gerontologist

Katie

Katie began working for SeniorNavigator while the site was still in development. As the Director of Operations, she is responsible for the oversight of the SeniorNavigator website and management of content and data based on consumer needs and current issues in aging, as well as the daily operations of the organization. Katie spent 23 years in the financial services industry before returning to school to earn her Masters in Gerontology from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. She serves on the Board of the Virginia Alliance of Information & Referral Systems (VAIRS).


Susan House, Technical Support Specialist

Susan

Susan has been a member of the Data Team since November 2006. She develops technical tools for the staff that will facilitate, track, and validate the information and data provided on the SeniorNavigator website. Susan comes to SeniorNavigator with 22 years as a technical manager and computer expert in the Federal government. Her work included managing large projects, planning and purchasing server hardware for a large government facility, helpdesk support, programming, system administration, setting up hardware, loading software, and supporting technology for people with visual disabilities.

Maggie Menard, Data Specialist

Maggie

Maggie joined SeniorNavigator prior to launch in 2000 as one of SeniorNavigator’s first full-time employees. Maggie’s history with SeniorNavigator provides a valuable perspective in understanding the evolution of the database. Maggie is responsible for entering, verifying and  updating information both on-line and by phone and assists in educating providers how to input changes regularly. Maggie also answers the Help Line for consumers who need help finding services in their city or county.  She previously served as billing clerk and bookkeeper. She attended the University of Mississippi and has completed several business and computer courses designed for non-profit agencies.

Bonnie Scimone, Community Outreach and Marketing Specialist

Bonnie

Bonnie joined SeniorNavigator in 2004 and serves as the Community Outreach and Marketing Specialist and as the community specialist for Central and Southside Virginia and works with 7 local government partnerships. She also supports SeniorNavigator’s partnership with the Virginia Department for the Aging and Area Agencies on Aging throughout the state and provides training and help desk support to private agencies involved with the No Wrong Door project. Bonnie has over 20 years of experience in sales, training, and relationship development. Before joining SeniorNavigator, Bonnie had a proven record of success in marketing communications. Previously, as an independent business owner, she designed and implemented comprehensive incentive programs and facilitated training programs focused on career development and team-building. She graduated from Longwood College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics and received her Elementary Education Teaching Certificate from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Kim Tarantino, Director of Communications and Community Partnerships

Kim

Kim joined the SeniorNavigator team in September 2003. As Director of Communications and Community Partnerships, she leads SeniorNavigator’s Community Team, overseeing all marketing outreach initiatives and public relations. She produces E-QUICKTIPS and other written communication pieces, directs SeniorNavigator’s Local Government Partnership Program, manages its new Supporter Advertisements section, coordinates special events, and develops new marketing materials to promote SeniorNavigator throughout the Commonwealth. Kim earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communication at Mary Baldwin College where she was a member of both the National Communication Honor Society and the National Academic Honor Society.


Erika Yssel, Director of Product Development

Erika worked on the initial site development as a contractor and joined the team full-time in June 2001, four months after launch, with sixteen years experience as an Information Systems professional. In her original position of Web Administrator for SeniorNavigator, she provided the back-end systems support for changes on the website, oversaw the technology contracts for server support, and was responsible for managing all web development. Currently, in her role as Director of Product Development, Erika oversees projects related to the development of new features and interactive tools on SeniorNavigator, and manages- the operation and functionality of the website. Erika's background includes: web development and website administration, system development and support on various platforms, network administration, and end-user support including application training.


Meet the Regional Community Specialists


Roanoke Valley-New River Valley, Katie Zawacki (email Katie)

Katie

Katie Zawacki received BA in Psychology/Sociology from Mary Baldwin College. She worked for the Community Service Board for the Roanoke Valley as a Certified Prevention Professional for 15 years. As a Community Specialist for SeniorNavigator, Katie is responsible for building relationships with partners, supporting local SeniorNavigator Centers and promoting SeniorNavigator in the Roanoke & New River Valley, Allegheny & Bath County.

Southwest Virginia, R. Allen Slagle (email Allen)

Allen

R. Allen Slagle was educated in the Bristol, Virginia School System, attended Criminal Justice Class and obtained certification as a Crime Prevention Specialist by the Department of Criminal Justice Services and the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners. Allen created the Crime Preventions Unit for the Bristol Va. Sheriffs Office and has developed a number of programs for Seniors that received State Awards and served the State Triad Board in Southwest, Va. As a Community Specialist for SerniorNavigator, Allen covers Southwest Virginia from Carroll County to Lee County which includes relationship management and support of forty-two SeniorNavigator Centers and three Local Government Partnerships.
