Who We Are

The Prevention Services division of Danville Pittsylvania Community Services offers substance use prevention and educational programs to individuals, including youth, and groups in the community. Services include:

Too Good for Drugs (TGFD) 

This research-based program utilized by Prevention Specialists in elementary classrooms in Danville and Pittsylvania county is designed to reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors related to alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. The program has shown a positive increase in knowledge of the harmful effects of tobacco use and a high percentage of youth who intend to quit or never begin smoking.  

Students’ Taking a Responsible Stand (STARS)

A program, for middle school students, which is implemented in collaboration and conjunction with the Family Life program in Pittsylvania County Schools. It is composed of a speaking panel of high school students who abstain from substance use.  Their purpose is to promote substance abuse prevention among all middle school students.       

Project Toward No Drug Abuse (Project TND)

This evidence-based substance abuse prevention program designed for implementation with youth ages 14 to 18 in a classroom or community setting.  The project includes 12 sessions, each of which is 10 to 50 minutes in length.  Each of the program sessions is highly participatory and interactive.  The sessions are interactive. 

Youth Tobacco Education

Presentation and educational programs are provided. Tobacco use and prevention materials are distributed to individuals through health fairs and community events.  Numerous tobacco prevention resources are available on loan for displays and health fairs.
