Around the globe, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day involves bringing greater recognition to the mistreatment of older adults and highlights the desperate need for appropriate action. It is an absolute travesty that we need a day to bring awareness to such an issue. It saddens me immensely that anyone is mistreated, neglected or abused. Our older adults have given so much and have a right to live in a world free from abuse.
The first awareness day was held 7 years ago in 2006 and involved hundreds of organizations and governments in every continent in the world. The annual remembrance was designed to support the United Nations’ International Plan of Action which recognizes the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human-rights issue.
Please wear something purple tomorrow to show your support for ending elder abuse and neglect. Purple is a color associated with dignity and respect -- just the way our older adults should be treated.
