Who We Are

Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision Impaired services include evaluation and training in communication skills, independent living skills, orientation and mobility, low vision evaluation and training, recreation, vocational, residential and medical services. Generally, goals are to enable blind/visually impaired person to function as independently as possible as productive members of society, in a safe and efficient manner.



Classes in electronic note takers, dictionaries and voice memos are available, as well as keyboarding, introduction to computer use, receptionist/telephone skills. Personal and home management skills include table skills, cooking, banking, cleaning, activities of daily living (bathing, labeling methods, etc.).



Special Education for the Blind - Pre-cane skills and cane skills are taught; community orientation (travel on sidewalk and around community using traffic, sun as orienter), route planning, use of auditory and tactual clues; light business and urban travel which deals with more difficult street crossing, use of elevators, escalators, solicitation of information and assistance; bus and cab travel, night travel, travel using a dog guide.



SENIOR SEMINAR - This one week training program is designed to provide visually impaired older adults with personal adjustment skills training and opportunities for socialization. Instruction is provided in Independent Living Skills, Medical and Health Care Issues, Leisure Time Skills, and Aging Issues.
